Custom Lithium Iron PhosphateThe lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) cells and batteries, also called LFP, is a more recent type of rechargeable lithium battery and specifically a type of lithium ion battery, which uses LiFePO4 as its cathode material. House of Batteries manufactures custom lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs and assemblies for many applications. Our battery design team uses the latest mechanical and electronic design tools to optimize the reliability, safety and manufacturability of your custom battery packs. This gives you the most cost effective and dependable lithium iron phosphate battery pack solution for your specific needs.
Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery Pros and ConsLFP cells and batteries use a lithium-ion-derived chemistry that shares many of the same advantages and disadvantages with other lithium ion battery chemistries. One advantage over other lithium-ion batteries is the superior thermal and chemical stability, which provides better safety characteristics than lithium-ion batteries that utilize other cathode materials. Lithium iron phosphate cells are said to be virtually incombustible in the event of mishandling during charge or discharge, and can handle higher temperatures without significant damage. Other major advantages for LiFePO4 when compared with other Li-ion chemistries are higher rate discharge capability and longer cycle life. LFP batteries have some deficiencies. The energy density both by energy and volume is somewhat lower than that of LiCoO2 cells and batteries. Battery manufacturers everywhere continue to work diligently to find new ways to maximize the energy and storage performance and reduce the size & weight of all battery chemistries. While LiFePO4 cells have lower voltage and energy density than other Li-ion cells, this disadvantage is offset over time by the slower rate of capacity loss (greater calendar-life) of LiFePO4 when compared with other lithium-ion battery chemistries (such as LiCoO2 cobalt or LiMn2O4 manganese spinel). Like other lithium ion cells, LFP cells can be specially formulated to provide either better power or energy characteristics depending on whether a longer run time or high rate discharge is more desirable. Custom Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery PacksLFP cells and batteries have been popular choice for electric vehicles (cars, trucks, and motorcycles) because of their fast-charge/hi-rate discharge capability and long cycle/calendar life. Power tool manufacturers have also adopted the LFP chemistry for the same reasons. Medical manufacturers and Defense contractors are adopting the LFP chemistry for its inherent safety.
