Battery Pack Design Process

The complex design process for medical equipment batteries involves integrating safety, reliability and performance in addition to your custom requirements. We utilize over 200 years of combined battery design experience as well as ongoing training and certification to produce superior quality medical device batteries that are based on the most advanced designs in the industry.

Design, power, battery performance are key considerations in choosing a medical battery pack and performance life, chargeability and cell type specifications all play a role in the design process. How the batteries will be transported and stored, as well as the geographical region in which they will be sold all determine regulation and safety standards, and therefore must also be considered, especially when working with foreign markets.

Battery Pack Traceability

Traceability and serialization involves assigning battery cells a serial number that can be read by humans and machines; the battery serial numbers are often linked to other components in the medical device battery pack for complete traceability. This method of Unique Device Identification (UDI) helps identify medical device batteries through the distribution cycle and improves safety and allows for post-market surveillance of the battery pack.

We provide lot traceability for all our custom medical battery packs, and will provide, upon customer request, complete traceability information for each part and testing procedure performed. Medical Battery Assembly Testing Procedures

Medical device batteries undergo a series of tests to ensure they adhere to industry and FDA regulations. Both individual components and the finished product are tested to ensure the battery pack meets operational and functional requirements. Assembled battery packs are tested using digital and analog methods of Outgoing Quality Control (OQC) that are determined based on battery chemistry. Procedures include testing performance in various environmental conditions, performing charging and discharging, and testing the medical battery in the application system.

Our facilities are regularly audited by medical OEMs to guarantee that our capabilities, equipment, and facility itself meet their requirements. Because medical battery assembly technology is constantly evolving, we utilize advanced testing methods to ensure that all our battery packs perform at the highest possible levels. We perform three critical tests on every medical battery pack we manufacture: inspection of all incoming components, in-process inspection during assembly, and final inspection. Additional testing, as requested by our medical OEM clients, can be performed as well.
