Batteries using zinc-air technology become energized only when atmospheric oxygen is absorbed into their electrolytes through the gas-permeable, liquid-tight membranes that are part of the batteries’ construction. Upon the removal of a sealing tab—usually a small piece of clear or colored plastic film—oxygen from the air is introduced into the cell. Most zinc-air batteries reach full operating voltage within only five seconds of being unsealed. The zinc-air chemistry, when sealed, has remarkable shelf life, with a self-discharge rate of just two percent per year.

Zinc-air batteries are available in button sizes as direct replacements of other button-type batteries. Recently introduced coin-sized zinc-air batteries are designed for portable electronic devices and personal medical equipment, such as cardiac monitors and transmitters.
